An HVN is a fat part of the volume profile where a lot of business got done. It represents acceptance and fair value, so price tends to stall, pause, and chop when it reaches one. HVNs act as sticky magnets: moves slow down inside them and rotations form. They are the structural opposite of LVNs, where price slices quickly. In practice you treat HVN edges as fade levels and expect choppy, two-sided behavior whenever price is parked on a high-volume node.
