A look above and fail (or below) is the auction testing whether business exists beyond a visible reference — the overnight high, the prior-day high, an IB edge, a band. Price pokes through, attracts no follow-through, and comes straight back: the probe answered no. Structurally it is excess plus trapped breakout traders, which is why these failures so often print the session's extreme and immediately arm the opposite trade — a fade back through the level, or a full Return-to-Value if the probe had accepted outside for a while first. The discipline is to judge the failure, not predict it: wait for the snap-back through the reference before positioning, because the same probe that fails in balance becomes a Price Discovery Continuation the moment it accepts.
